The animated films with Kati and Piet were created from the idea of offering road safety education for pre-school children, even in times of the pandemic.
Our films support you as parents in practicing safe road safety with your children, because practicing is the most important training of all. Your child learns about road traffic and how to walk safely on everyday journeys. Children learn particularly well when they are allowed to try things out for themselves. But especially from correctly demonstrated behavior in road traffic.
Watch the films together with your child and discuss what Kati and Piet experienced. The short clips go from easy to difficult. This should make practising with your child easier.
⦁ Traffic lights,
⦁ At the garage,
⦁ At the crosswalk,
⦁ Cross the road,
⦁ The traffic island,
⦁ The lamp trick.
It is important that you talk to your child about and explain the different ways of crossing a road so that they can better understand your approach.
Let your child decide where they can cross the road safely, intervene if necessary and encourage your child when they have done something well. Give your child plenty of time. It simply takes longer for a decision to be made, but it is worth waiting and your child will become confident in dealing with road traffic.
If you have any questions or suggestions, you can contact the Cologne police road safety advice service by phone on 0221 229-6717 or by email at verkehrssicherheitsarbeit.koeln [at] polizei.nrw.de.
The films were made during the long pandemic phase from March 2020. Chief Superintendent Iris Gaeb from the Cologne police used the time when she was unable to visit kindergartens or schools to do meaningful work in her area of expertise, mostly from home. In the process, the road safety advisor also got to know completely new skills: creating animated films was not previously one of her tasks.
Note:
- Currently there are audio dropouts if you want to watch the videos with Apple mobile devices/the Safari browser.
